Was there an intruder coming into their camp? She gingerly stood up on her paws and pushed away the low-hanging ferns that was the entrance to the apprentice's den.Blinking the sleep out of her eyes, Sparrowpaw was about to open her jaws and mew a warning to her Clanmates when she realized that the rustling wasn't made by an intruder- it had been made by Darkfur, the OceanClan deputy! Why did Darkfur just enter the camp now? Sparrowpaw thought, though she knew that the only way she would find out was if she talked to him. But Sparrowpaw was a bit afraid of Darkfur- he had a harsh temper and could easily squish a kit if he had to. But there was no choice- she just had to know!In two fox-lengths, Sparrowpaw bounded up to him and demanded in the most confident voice that she could muster: "Why did you come back to camp so late?""It's none of your buisness. You're little more than an apprentice. Your warrior ceremony is moons away," Darkfur growled in response. Sparrowpaw could sense a trace of fear in his eyes. Why would Darkfur be scared? But Sparrowpaw didn't dare put her thoughts to words. Darkfur was right- her apprentice ceremony was only a moon ago. She still had at least 5 more moons of training before she'd become a full warrior. Sparrowpaw had no right to pry into Darkfur's buisness.Darkfur's gravelly voice interrupted her thoughts. "Well, stop standing like an icicle and go wake up the apprentices for their training sessions!" he meowed with a glint of anger in his eyes, his white tail lashing from side to side. Terrified, Sparrowpaw quickly mumbled, "Y-yes, Darkfur," and sprinted off towards the apprentice's den.As her paws padded on the damp ground towards the apprentice's den, Sparrowpaw had a feeling that Darkfur was up to something. She didn't know what it was, but she knew that it wasn't something good.As Sparrowpaw woke up each one of the apprentices in turn, she felt guilty for having to wake up her brother, Ashpaw, since he was a heavy sleeper. But a deputy's orders were orders. "Hey!" Ashpaw groaned into Sparrowpaw's ear."Sorry- Darkfur's orders," meowed Sparrowpaw in reply. There weren't many apprentices in OceanClan- just her, Ashpaw, his friend Orangepaw and Sparrowpaw's friend Mosspaw. According to Sparrowpaw, Mosspaw was one of the most beautiful she-cats in all of OceanClan. She had green-blue tortoiseshell fur, and the most bright green eyes that you could recognize from anywhere!"C'mon, Sparrowpaw," meowed Mosspaw, giving her a playful cuff on the ear. "What are you, a tree?"Grinning, Sparrowpaw followed Mosspaw towards the fresh-kill pile. There was only a fish and a mouse, since the hunting patrols hadn't come back to camp yet, so they shared a fish, devouring it in a few ravenous bites.Swiping her tongue around her jaws, Sparrowpaw stood up on her paws and looked around the camp. She soon spotted Moonstar, the Clan leader, urgently talking with Darkfur and a senior warrior called Flameheart. Flameheart had so many scars on his bright orange pelt that Sparrowpaw couldn't count them all! With a glance at Mosspaw, Sparrowpaw found that her eyes were looking at Moonstar's den and the three cats that were meowing outside of it in urgent tones. "Let's go hear what they're meowing about!" Sparrowpaw announced excitedly to Mosspaw."Okay," Mosspaw meowed. Sparrowpaw could tell that Mosspaw was frightened at the prospect of getting caught, especially since Moonstar was Mosspaw's mother. So Sparrowpaw meowed, "Don't worry- we won't get caught."Instead of replying, Mosspaw confidently bounded ahead towards Moonstar's den.Sparrowpaw padded behind, wondering what had motivated her friend to race away so suddenly. It doesn't really matter- at least we're both going to hear what they're taking about! she thought happily. But then another thought popped into her head. Why did Darkfur tell me to wake up the apprentices, if our mentors are just stirring now? this thought put all happiness out of her mind. When Sparrowpaw and Mosspaw reached the shelter of a bramble bush, (which was the closest place that they could get to Moonstar's den without being seen) they could just make out Moonstar's clear, authoritive voice above the others. "Just watch out for MarshClan scent on our territory," Moonstar announced. As Darkfur and Flameheart nodded their massive heads in approval, Sparrowpaw wondered why Moonstar would warn her deputy and senior warrior about MarshClan scent in OceanClan territory. Surely MarshClan wasn't in so much trouble that they needed more territory to support their Clan?Ignoring a loud warning hiss from Mosspaw, Sparrowpaw stepped out into the open, in clear view of Moonstar and the others. As she did this, a breeze made the warmth of late Greenleaf almost dissapear. Sparrowpaw could pick up a scent on the breeze: the acrid tang of MarshClan! Please comment on my story!
