She was so excited about possibly catching MarshClan intruders that she almost skidded into Darkfur!"Stay near me, Sparrowpaw," cautioned Sandpool, Sparrowpaw's mentor. Sandpool was friendly and kind to Sparrowpaw, and also had a brown pelt and dull black eyes. As soon as Sparrowpaw slunk back to where Sandpool was, she saw that the two other cats on the patrol were Violetstorm, Whiteclaw, and his apprentice, Orangepaw. Believe it or now, Orangepaw's brother is Flameheart, the senior warrior! Violetstorm is a beautiful white she-cat with a strange violet-shaped tail, and is also her friend Swanpaw's mother. Whiteclaw is a kind but fierce tom with a black pelt and white stripes and claw tips. The patrol moved on, splashing through the marshy area of their territory, which led towards the border with MarshClan. Sparrowpaw narrowly avoided a twisted root on the ground in her excitement! At last, the patrol skidded to a halt at the border with MarshClan. At the exact same moment, Sandpool stiffened and mewed, "I smell a MarshClan patrol!"Four cats glanced warily over the line of bramble bushes, the border between MarshClan and OceanClan. It was, sure enough, a MarshClan patrol. The only cat that Sparrowpaw recognized on the patrol was Silverfeather, the Clan's deputy. An apprentice on the patrol looked confident and almost leaped over the border, if it wasn't for Silverfeather hissing softly, "Not now.""We smelt your scent on our territory," mewed Darkfur jeeringly. Silverfeather held Darkfur's gaze for a long moment before hissing, "How do you know that it was our scent? It could have easily been ForestClan's."The OceanClan warriors bristled in anticipation of a fight. Sparrowpaw's heart flew a mile a minute at the thought of fighting in her first battle. "Oh, we know your scent," retorted Darkfur, the white stripes on his pelt gleaming in the sun. Sparrowpaw suddenly realized that it was already almost sunhigh! When Silverfeather was clearly at a loss of words, Darkfur meowed, "We know that your apprentices have been crossing our borders, so don't think that you can get away by hiding anything from us."At the sight of Silverfeather's and the other MarshClan cats' embarrassed and dismayed faces, Sparrowpaw smiled broadly. They had won - for now.As soon as the patrol came back, Swanpaw hurried to meet Sparrowpaw. She had been wondering if they had tracked down the MarshClan cats since the patrol had left. Now was the time to find out. Swanpaw didn't have to even ask - she could tell from the triumphant look on Sparrowpaw's face that the OceanClan warriors had tracked them down. "Guess what, Swanpaw?" Sparrowpaw mewed excitedly to her friend."What?" Swanpaw replied, even though she already knew the answer."We won!" Sparrowpaw's smile was jubilant."What you you mean, you won?" questioned Swanpaw. Knowing MarshClan, they wouldn't give up that easily."Darkfur made them embarrassed by saying that we already knew that their apprentices were crossing our border," she finished."But it's not over yet," mewed Swanpaw worriedly as she gazed at the gleaming sun which was high in the sky."I can't wait for our first battle!" Sparrowpaw meowed in excitement. But Swanpaw wasn't so joyous. She didn't want the two Clans to get into a fight and ruin the moons of peace - and probably loose a few lives in the process. I guess that's why I want to be a medicine cat, she thought. I want to help cats, not train to hurt them. Suddenly, Sparrowpaw's jaws opened into a huge yawn. "I'll go and take my late sunhigh nap, then," she mewed as she headed for the apprentice's den.As Swanpaw watched her friend leave, she wondered what would happen the next day. Would the two Clans already be in a battle? What about in the next moon? And, more importantly, would anyone's life be lost? What about Sparrowpaw's? Would she die defending her Clan? But Swanpaw couldn't bring herself to think about that."SWANPAW!" came Bramblepool's voice from the Medicine Cat's Den. "Please come and help me sort herbs.""Yes, I'm coming, Bramblepool," mewed Swanpaw as she trudged off to the Medicine Cat's Den. As she was walking, Swanpaw wondered if she really wanted to take the path of a Medicine Cat - or would she rather be a warrior and die nobly defending her Clan?Honestly, she wasn't very sure anymore.
